5 count Gestroi Isopods, Armadillidium gestroi
Live Bioactive Clean-Up Crew
$25.25
If you’re looking for an isopod that combines prehistoric aesthetics with high-impact "pop" against your terrarium's greenery, the Gestroi (Armadillidium gestroi) is the gold standard. These stunning, oversized "pill bugs" are famous for their massive, lemon-yellow splotches on a deep, obsidian-black shell.
Why Gestroi is the Perfect Terrarium Resident:
Massive Visual Impact: One of the largest species in the Armadillidium genus, these giants can grow up to 20 mm. Their bold, bright yellow markings make them incredibly easy to spot, even in a heavily planted bioactive setup.
The "Slow & Steady" Tank: Unlike some species that scurry away at the slightest movement, Gestroi are calm, confident, and slower-moving. They spend a lot of time on the surface, making them one of the best "display" isopods in the hobby.
Impressive Defense: When startled, they roll into a perfect, armored ball (the classic "roly-poly"). Their thick, high-domed shells give them a rugged, prehistoric look that adds a unique texture to your ecosystem.
Low Maintenance & Long-Lived: These isopods are known for being particularly long-lived compared to smaller species. While they take a little longer to establish a colony, they are very hardy and thrive in temperate to semi-tropical environments with a good moisture gradient.
Gentle Giants: They are excellent "neighbors" for larger reptiles or amphibians. Their larger size and armored shells make them less likely to be viewed as a snack by many inhabitants, while they quietly work away at decaying organic matter and leaf litter.
